Activity Objective

  • To foster teacher-student relationships
  • To develop key peer connections
  • To encourage development of social-emotional skills
  • To spark interest and engagement in science

Duration: 5 Minutes

Materials Needed

  • Small pieces of paper with names of common scientific objects or phenomenons written on them

Activity Instructions

  1. Prepare: Prior to the start of the class, prepare slips of paper with names or pictures of common scientific objects or phenomena. For example, "Gravity," "Rainbow," "Laboratory Flask," etc.

  2. Divide: Split the class into two equal teams. If the number of students is odd, the teacher can join in or appoint someone as the scorekeeper.

  3. Explain: Explain the rules of the game clearly. A student from each team will come up and pick a slip of paper. Without revealing the word to anyone, they will have to act it out silently, while their team tries to identify what it is.

  4. Start the Game: Begin the game by having one student come up and pick a slip. Use a timer to keep the game on schedule - each round should not last more than 30 seconds.

  5. Award Points: If the team correctly guesses the word, they get a point. If they don't, the other team gets a chance to guess and score the point.

  6. Continue the Game: Rotate the students so that everyone gets a turn at acting out the clue.

Note

This activity encourages communication, collaboration, and creativity - all part of key social-emotional skills. Furthermore, by associating fun with science, it can contribute to making science a more accessible and engaging subject for the students. Remind the students that it's not about winning or losing, but about working together, understanding each other, and most importantly, having fun while learning.
